Using pesticides on your lawn is one of the worst possible things you can do to yourself. These pesticides such as 2,4-D cause infertility and leukemia. Basically you have a nice lawn but your chances of having cancer are much higher and there is a chance of you not being able to have kids. I think I would rather have weeds. Better solutions are to use organic lawn care practices such as corn gluten, slit-seeding, nematodes and others. It might be some more work but it is always better than having a permanent defect or disease for the rest of your life. Monday, May 10, 2010
Organic Lawn Care
Using pesticides on your lawn is one of the worst possible things you can do to yourself. These pesticides such as 2,4-D cause infertility and leukemia. Better solutions are to use organic lawn care practices such as corn gluten, slit-seeding, nematodes and others. It might be some more work but it is always better than having a permanent defect or disease for the rest of your life. What Can I do?

“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”

Most people reading their blogs are probably asking themselves what they can do to help make the world a greener and better place. The simple answer is that you can replace your lightbulbs, turn your lights off, take shorter showers, compost your food waste and recycle paper waste but really the truth is this will not have much affect. The most effective thing to do is to spread the message about green living. With everyone working together the affect of helping will be very profound. We must be the ocean of change we want to see in the world.

Lightbulbs-My Opinion
Many people wonder what type of lightbulbs they should use. LED, incandescent or CFL's? It really depends on your budget and your overall electricity use as well as on each bulb. The energy savings of each lightbulb are compounded as the wattage of the lightbulb goes up. If you are mainly using high wattages on most of your lightbulbs the more efficient lightbulbs are better. But these more effecient lightbulbs are also much more expensive (but they have a longer life). If you are not intent on spending money now you should go with the incandescent or CFL. But, if you are interested in making a guranteed investment in the long term (safer than the stock market) you should look into an LED bulb because of its high efficiency and long life.

The New York Times current number one technology article concerns tricks using Google. The average person might just use Google to search broadly on the internet. This article tells of ten alternate uses including:
-Calculator
-Speller
-Dictionary
-Telephone Area Code Finder
-Use the OR operator to be more broad in search terms
-Searching within one site only
-Search for Document types
-Do currency conversions
-Find the time around the world
Many of these features I already use such as the calculator feature and currency conversion. I believe these to be the most useful. I could see potential though in the site specific search. Most of the other uses seem not to be very useful. For example the Dictionary feature is not so important because you could just type in "(word of choice) dictionary.com". Finding area codes is kind of weird because it is almost a feature that would be used to stalk people based on their phone numbers by finding out where they live. The others are just features that are kind of obscure and would not be used very often. Besides these minor flaws, these Google search features are ones that can drastically improve a user experience on that website.
